 Job Duties and Tasks

Marie Sklodwska-Curie Actions, Early Stage Researcher

Deadline for applications:July 9th, 2018, Expected starting date:November 1st, 2018

Job description:

The job is a full time position for an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in the field of paving materials engineering and hydraulics, with special emphasis on porous asphalt, urban drainage modelling and mapping for decision-making. The title of the project is: Resilient and sustainable Permeable Pavements For urban Flood Mitigation (RePP4FM). The goal is to design flood resilient Permeable Pavements Systems (PPS) made with novel materials, with high void ratios and mechanical properties for moderate/heavy traffic, and then to map and prioritize urban areas for their application, according to their vulnerability of  potential impacts of different rainfalls under Climate Change and urbanization perspectives.

Working place

The project will take place at the Department of Transports and Technology of Projects and Processes of University of Cantabria (UC), Avenida de Los Castros 44, 39005 Santander (Spain). The Roads and Airports Laboratory (LCS) and the Sustainable Drainage Laboratory (SuDSLAB) are fully equipped for porous asphalt research and hydraulic modelling of urban catchments.  Secondments in TECNALIA (Spain), the University of Nottingham (United Kingdom) and CEPSA (Spain) are scheduled.

Project description

The individual research project will aim at designing flood resilient Permeable Pavements Systems (PPS) made with novel pavement materials (porous asphalt with high void ratios and improved mechanical properties) and mapping with GIS the urban areas more suitable for their implementation, according to their vulnerability to the increase of rainfall intensity associated to Climate Change. ESR will work on innovative porous asphalt mixtures and their implementation in an urban context at the laboratories of the UC, complementing this main work addressing the infiltration techniques and their use for urban water management at TECNALIA and getting knowledge on the vast range of bituminous binders and the use of advanced additives at CEPSA

The major tasks of the research activity are as follows:

Task 1: testing novel raw materials (HV bitumen, super-plasts, polymers) to develop high-performance permeable layers.

Task 2: lab testing paving materials in mechanical and hydrological terms according to future traffic & climate prognoses.

Task 3: assessment of potential risks set by Climate Change and urbanization using GIS to map and prioritize urban areas.

Task 4: development of a multi-criteria decision support tool integrating functional, economic, environmental and social criteria into a sustainability index for the selection of the PPS design that best fits the vulnerable areas.

The expected results are (1) Characterization of novel flood resilient PPS made with novel raw materials. (2) Review of the risks associated with resilient urban PPS in flood prone areas. (3) Development of a decision GIS-based support tool to facilitate the location and selection of sustainable PPS in cities.

From this training, the ESR will acquire broad knowledge and expertise in asphalt pavements, with specific reference to porous asphalts, and in the area of sustainable urban drainage modelling and decision making for adaptation to Climate Change through the use of resilient permeable surfaces.

The training will be complemented through three planned secondments. In TECNALIA, under the supervision of the Dr. David García-Sánchez, the ESR will learn to assess of the impact of increased flood risk due to climate change on urban pavements (4 months). In the company CEPSA, the ESR will characterize High-Viscosity bitumen for new porous asphalt designs, under the supervision of Vicente Pérez-Mena (2 months). In Nottingham, the ESR will do the dynamic lab characterization of PPS with the supervision of the Dr. Álvaro García-Hernández (3 months).

Employment contract and remuneration

The selected candidate will be appointed under a 36-months full-time employment contract with full social security and fiscal coverage, as foreseen by the Spanish national legislation. The remuneration will be compliant with the rules of the ITN-MSCA, as by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Work Programme 2016-17, ‘European Union Contribution and Applicable Rates’. The gross amount of the allowances includes the salary (36424.32€/year), the mobility allowance (7200€/year) and a family allowance if applicable (6000€/year). These gross amounts include all compulsory deductions under national applicable legislation and consequently net amount will be lower and will vary depending on the case

Dedication regime and duration of the contract

The duration of the fixed-term contract will be 36 months , dedicated Duración determinada tiempo completo, and may be extended provided that the maximum limit of 6 months is not exceeded, depending on the continuity of the object of the contract and the existence of credit; projects associated with the implementation of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan or from European Union funds are excepted in terms of duration.

On schedule: From 9:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 18:30.

 Retribution

96632,64 (gross salary including the proportional part of the extra payments during the contract.).

 Requirements

Academic requirements

  • Investigador tipo 4 (No Doctor) Titulado universitario menos de cuatro años desde la fecha de obtención del título
  • Todos los Máster

Requirements

General requirements:

Researchers can be of any nationality. They are required to undertake physical, transnational mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment (see mobility rule in Definitions). Nationality is therefore not a criterion. Rather the location of the researcher's residence or main activity during the 3 years prior to their recruitment is determining.

Be in possession of the qualification required in this call. The documents issued abroad that want to assert themselves in this procedure must be legalized in accordance with current regulations.

 Merits to be evaluated

Other official qualifications

The candidate is required to have a master degree in Civil Engineering giving access to the PhD school and NOT to hold any PhD degree. At the time of recruitment, the ESR must hold a Master degree giving access to PhD and not more than 4 years of previous research activity. A PhD degree in any field is not compatible with this ESR position

Experience

Previous research experience, (which must be no longer than 4 years), although appreciated, is not mandatory.

Main research field: Paving materials engineering and hydraulics

Research subfield: Asphalt and Urban Drainage

Institution description:

The project will take place at the Transports and Technology of Project

Complementary Training

Willingness to travel internationally for the purpose of research, training and dissemination is mandatory. Transnational mobility is an essential requirement of Marie Sklodwska-Curie Training Networks. At the time of recruitment, the ESR must not have resided in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date and not have carried out in Spain his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.). Applicants must be prepared for the secondments of several months in different cities of Spain and also in Nottingham, United Kingdom.

Any course related with Laboratory Activities, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and/or hydraulic modelling will be considered.
